The nearly 49km railway, proposed by Vingroup, could reach speeds of up to 250km/h. The Department of Finance has been assigned to lead the investment appraisal process under the PPP model. Ho Chi Minh City is accelerating the development of a high-speed urban railway connecting the city center to Can Gio district.
Boosting Strategic Infrastructure in Can Gio
In an effort to enhance transport infrastructure linking Can Gio—the southern coastal gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, the Office of the People’s Committee has announced the conclusions of Vice Chairman Bui Xuan Cuong regarding key urban railway projects.
Among them, the 250km/h Can Gio railway line proposed by Vingroup was assigned to the Department of Finance to urgently coordinate with relevant agencies, guide the investor in preparing a project proposal under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, and submit it to the People’s Committee before April 15, 2025.
Can Gio Urban Railway: Modern Transport Ambition for Coastal Development
The railway line connecting downtown Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio spans approximately 48.7km, starting from Nguyen Van Linh (District 7), running through Nguyen Luong Bang and Rung Sac Road, and ending at a 39-hectare site adjacent to the mega-project Vinhomes Green Paradise Can Gio.
Key technical specifications:
-
Double track, 1,435mm gauge, elevated design
-

The project, proposed by Vingroup, will be funded through internal capital and legally mobilized funds, demonstrating a strong commitment to realizing modern infrastructure that supports urban and tourism development in coastal areas.
Thu Thiem – Long Thành Railway Also Progressing
In parallel, the Thu Thiem – Long Thanh railway, about 42km long with an estimated investment of USD 3.5 billion, is being prepared under the Ministry of Construction. It is expected to be submitted for National Assembly approval by October 2025, aiming to effectively connect the Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports.
Previously, the Prime Minister directed Ho Chi Minh City to urgently study and implement key urban railway lines, call for capable investors, and report progress by April 2025.
Transforming Can Gio’s Infrastructure Landscape
The high-speed railway to Can Gio is expected to enhance urban-tourism connectivity, strongly support mega coastal developments like Vinhomes Green Paradise, and promote comprehensive growth, turning Can Gio into a new economic hub in southern Ho Chi Minh City.
