Severe Traffic Congestion from An Phu Interchange to Ho Chi Minh City - Dau Giay Expressway

An Phu Interchange: A Major Traffic Hotspot

At An Phu Interchange, traffic congestion has become increasingly severe, especially along Mai Chi Tho Boulevard leading to the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway. Vehicles including trucks, containers, and private cars form long lines stretching for kilometers without moving. Many drivers were forced to turn off their engines and wait under the scorching sun, while traffic police were present at key junctions to direct traffic, but the situation saw little improvement.

According to driver Nguyen Van Tam (from Long Hai Ward, HCMC), it took him over an hour to move just 1 kilometer. In front of him was a seemingly endless line of vehicles, with no exit in sight. Despite the presence of traffic police to manage lanes, congestion showed no signs of easing.

Main Cause of the Traffic Jam

The HCMC - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, stretching 55 kilometers, is a vital artery connecting Ho Chi Minh City to the Southeast region. However, in recent years, the vehicle volume has surged beyond the expressway’s capacity. In particular, the section from An Phu Interchange to Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway is operating at over 125% of its original design capacity. This overload has led to prolonged traffic jams, especially during peak hours.

    Infrastructure Expansion Plans & Solutions

To resolve the issue, the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) plans to begin expanding the 21-km section of the HCMC - Long Thanh Expressway starting August 19, 2025. The project is expected to cost over VND 15,700 billion and aims to be completed by 2026, reducing overload on the current route.

In addition, the HCMC Department of Construction has approved a VND 900 billion project to expand the roadway from An Phu Interchange to Ring Road 2. This strategic project is expected to ease congestion in Eastern HCMC and provide a long-term traffic solution.

    Outlook and Future Prospects

The congestion at An Phu Interchange clearly illustrates that HCMC’s transportation infrastructure is reaching its limits. However, with upcoming expansion projects on both the expressway and Ring Road 2, there’s hope for easing congestion, improving traffic flow, and making commuting between HCMC and nearby provinces more efficient in the near future.
